A banker and a beautician opened a tiny salon in Kuala Lumpur in 1994. Three decades later, HerbaLine runs more than 50 facial spas in Malaysia, Brunei and Taiwan, eight in-house product lines and a wellness group with restaurants and a retreat. The founders’ story, the products and the ideas behind one of Malaysia’s longest-running spa brands, built from the company’s own history, The Edge, a business-school case study, the NPRA cosmetic registry and 26,000 Google reviews.

Quick answer
HerbaLine is a Malaysian facial-spa chain and skincare brand founded by CK Low and Kim Low, who opened a 200 sq ft beauty salon in Kuala Lumpur in 1994 and launched the HerbaLine brand in 2000 (herbaline.com.my). It now counts 29 company-owned spas and 26 dealer outlets in Malaysia, plus outlets in Brunei and Taiwan (company-stated, September 2026). Its eight product lines — led by Fleurgies and Herblands — total 131 active NPRA notifications, 74 of them filed in 2025–2026 alone (NPRA extract, 3–5 September 2026). Customers rate it a weighted 4.87 stars across 26,492 Google reviews. Revenue is not published.
Key takeaways
- Thirty years of steady growth. From a single 200 sq ft salon (1994) to more than 50 locations, without outside investors that we could find.
- A spa concept business schools teach. HerbaLine’s people strategy is the subject of a Nanyang Technological University case study sold through Harvard Business Publishing.
- Eight product lines, 131 products, refreshed fast: 74 of them were notified in 2025–2026.
- Customers love it. 38 Google Maps listings with 26,492 reviews at a weighted 4.87 stars (captured 24–25 September 2026).
- More than a spa. HerbaLine Wellness Group now spans restaurants, a retreat, head spas and nail care — a lifestyle brand built around one idea: good things should not be only for the rich.

Who is behind HerbaLine, and where did it come from?
HerbaLine was founded by CK Low, a former banker who is managing director, and his wife Kim Low, a former beautician (The Edge Malaysia, “Spreading their wings”, 9 August 2016). The company today calls itself HerbaLine Wellness Group (hwg.com.my), and its skincare is notified by Skin Essentials (M) Sdn Bhd in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam.
A banker, a beautician and 200 square feet
According to The Edge, CK met Kim while she worked in a beauty parlour. He helped her at weekends, and the two eventually decided to open their own facial spa. The company’s own history page sets the scene: a salon of just 200 square feet above a shophouse in Kuala Lumpur, opened in 1994. In 1997 the couple began distributing products; in 2000 they launched the HerbaLine brand; and in 2006 they reinvented the business as a modern spa concept. It is a classic husband-and-wife founding story — one partner with the craft, the other with the numbers — and three decades on, both are still at the heart of the brand.
The idea that changed the business
The 2006 turn was inspired by the doctor-led beauty businesses the founders saw in Korea, Japan and Taiwan (The Edge, 2016). HerbaLine built its offer around a “stress-free” facial experience and well-trained therapists — a people-first model that grew from one outlet in 2000 to 55 by 2014, as documented in the case study Malaysia’s HerbaLine Facial Spa: A Human Resource Strategy for Growing a Startup (Nanyang Technological University, distributed by Harvard Business Publishing). Few Malaysian beauty brands can say their growth is taught in business schools.
From a spa to a wellness group
By 2016 the Lows were running 28 company-owned branches and 32 franchised locations, and had added a healthy-eating café and a staycation guest house (The Edge). CK Low explained the thinking behind the group’s mid-range pricing in one memorable line: “Why is good stuff only for rich people?” Today HerbaLine Wellness Group also includes Mama Kim Wellness Kitchen, Dai Jin Dining, Shiang Hai Vegetarian Restaurant, a retreat, Aura Head Spa and Nail In (herbaline.com.my, company-stated).

A range that moves as fast as the spas
Most spa brands change slowly. HerbaLine does the opposite: 74 of its 131 active notifications — 56% — were filed in 2025 and 2026, including a whole series of Fleurgies essence oils in June 2026 and the new KYVAS and Aura Head Spa lines (NPRA). Fresh products give loyal spa customers something new to try at every visit, and every facial doubles as a product demonstration.
Who the customer is
HerbaLine’s customer is the working urban woman who wants a relaxing, professional facial at a mid-range price and a matching routine at home. Its outlets cluster in Klang Valley malls and suburbs — Jalan Pahang, Cheras, Sri Hartamas, Kepong, Puchong, Klang, Bangi — and reach Ipoh, Penang, Melaka, Johor, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak (herbaline.com.my outlet list).
Why has HerbaLine lasted three decades?
HerbaLine has lasted because it built a repeatable spa experience, trained people to deliver it with care, and gave customers a steady flow of new products to take home.
Customers keep coming back
We captured 38 HerbaLine listings on Google Maps with 26,492 reviews at a weighted 4.87 stars (24–25 September 2026). Bandar Botanic in Klang alone has more than 2,100 reviews, and Ipoh Greentown and Melaka each more than 1,100 — the kind of volume that only comes from years of loyal regulars.
Where HerbaLine sells
- Company-owned and dealer spas — 29 own plus 26 dealer outlets, and outlets in Brunei (Gadong Centrepoint) and Taiwan (Hsinchu) (herbaline.com.my, September 2026).
- Its own online store — shophwg.com, which sells the skincare alongside Mama Kim food and home products.
- Social media — Facebook herbaline.my and Instagram @herbalinemy.
Six reasons HerbaLine succeeds (our view)
- An experience, not just a product. The “stress-free” facial gives customers a reason to return every month.
- People first. A business-school case study on its human-resource model shows how seriously the founders take training and staff.
- A dealer network. Twenty-six dealer outlets extend the brand’s reach without the capital cost of company-owned spas.
- Product renewal. Seventy-four new notifications in two years keep the shelf fresh.
- Fair pricing as a value. “Why is good stuff only for rich people?” is a brand promise customers can feel at the till.
- A wider wellness world. Restaurants, a retreat and head spas turn a facial brand into a lifestyle group customers can grow with.
Lessons for your own brand
- Build the service first, then the product. HerbaLine sold facials for six years before launching its brand in 2000. Our guide to launching a clinic or spa skincare line covers the steps.
- Invest in your people. A spa brand is only as good as the therapist in the room; HerbaLine made training a strategy, not a cost.
- Refresh the range often. A fast notification rhythm keeps repeat customers interested; our NPRA notification guide explains the filing and renewal cycle.
- Give your brand a belief. A single sentence — good things are not only for the rich — has guided pricing, products and even restaurants for decades.
Room to grow
- Tell the founders’ story more often. The Lows’ remarkable journey is told mainly in a 2016 press feature and the company history page; more of it in the brand’s own channels would deepen the connection with a new generation of customers.
- A simple starting point. Eight lines and 131 products are a lot for a first-time shopper to navigate. The new three-step KYVAS routine is a good move in this direction.
Beyond Malaysia
HerbaLine already operates in Brunei and has an outlet in Hsinchu, Taiwan (herbaline.com.my). A spa-plus-product model with a dealer network is well suited to further ASEAN expansion. For a contrasting founder-led model, see our NARQES brand research.
